Who am I? I’m a teenager who takes mirrors pics with my friends. Then as soon as I get home those pictures get uploaded to facebook. Don’t let the mirror pics on facebook, deceive who I am as a photographer. I can take the most amazing pictures you’ve ever seen with one click of a shutter button, but oh…let me tell you it isn’t easy. I took a photography class because I needed the credit, now I can probably tell you everything you will ever want to know about lines and shapes and what they mean in a picture.
What you don’t realize is what goes on before I hit that shutter button. So let me explain, I take these pictures to capture a moment in time because years from now things can be different. Everything will look either the same where I can point it out with a snap of a finger or changed to a point where I barely recognize it anymore. It captures a point in time where I was happy, sad, surprised or complete chaos was all around me. I set up my camera and try to find perfection through the lens. I know that perfection isn’t capable but you can at least try. I also try to portray my subject to the fullest of its potential, whether my subject is human or an inanimate object.
This project that you are currently looking at is my wonderful Self-Portrait. It was a long process of thinking about how to portray myself in a way that many people will be able to sort of figure it out, by just looking at the picture. It was also a process of setting up the self timer and dashing to my position, posing and hoping that I didn’t make a horrible face. In this photo I want to portray myself as a clash of cultures. Growing up in a multicultural family I was able to see everything with two different views and prospective. Sometimes those prospective didn’t agree with each other and it was hard to make a choice.
My Alter Ego must have been one of the best projects that I’ve worked on so far. It was fun being someone I’m not for a day. I had so much makeup on that Gaga couldn’t even compare to me (or that’s how I felt at least). I’m a very simple girl and super heavy make-up isn’t what I normally wear on my Friday nights out. My Alter Ego doesn’t feel like me or even look like me but that’s what I wanted to aim for. In my alter ego I wanted to aim for the totally opposite of them simple girl I am.
92: What Not to Wear, Final Product
We played What Not to Wear in my closet today. Turns out most of my button down shirts don't hit at the right place. They're all too short. Except for like, the most recent one I've purchased :-P So now I can put together acceptable outfits from the clothes in my closet. And we still have to put it back together in such a way so I know what to phase out as I have the funds to build a better wardrobe.
Biggest note, I am not allowed to look down at what I'm wearing and go "Ick!" I HAVE to look at what I'm wearing IN A MIRROR.
And then while we were at the mall today, we stopped at the Clinique Counter and I had my makeup done. I now COMPLETELY understand the benefits of having someone whose full-time REAL job is to play with makeup, play with me as opposed to someone who has a home run business. Also... found out that the alcohol in my cleaning products is what's keeping my face from healing :-P Also learned that the girls at the counter are NOT there to sell stuff. They're there to help. And that a more structured facial system and makeup other than the regular drug store brands would be GREATLY beneficial. I was introduced to it by my best friend, but I came to this conclusion on my own.
So, new me! We'll see how long it takes before it fully sinks in and becomes a regular thing ;-)
